Introduction

Many memories are brought to mind by tastes and aromas.  DJ Operman's verse 'My nooi is in 'n naartjie, my Ouma in kaneel.  Daar is iemand in anys, daars 'n vrou in elke geur' says it all.

Mandi and I are sisters who grew up in a home where real 'boerekos' was the order of the day.  Sunday lunches when all the family got together after church at our grandparent's home to enjoy a feast of chicken, thick gravy on rice, sweet pumpkin and beans (thinly sliced by hand with a Wilson's blade)  with potato and onion.  The sweet aroma of malva pudding greeted you as you walked through the door.

Nothing says 'Welcome' and 'I love you, you are safe here' like a home cooked meal.

Mandi and I decide on a challenge at the beginning of each year.  Inspired by the movies Julie/Julia and The 100 foot Journey, we decided to take our Mother Poppie, and our Grandmother Malie's cookbooks and 'reinvent' the recipes.

We live 350 km's from each other, so this mission will definitely be a challenge.  We visit each other every 6 weeks.

Mandi and I have taken the cookbooks, filled with tried and trusted recipes indicated with stars and enthusiastic "YES!!!!" comments, and re-invented the recipes. Mandi will be cooking the original recipe as done by our mother and grandmother.  I will be putting a modern spin on the recipe.  Some of these recipes were collected from aunts and friends through the years and tested by Mom and Gran.

The first recipe will be cooked on 3rd January 2016 and we hope to complete the recipes in both cookbooks by the end of the year.

Comments welcome :)  (We only have so many spatulas so please be kind......)
